Transnational Marriage Abandonment: 8th October, 2021

Professor Sundari Anitha, an academic, former VAWG pracitioner, and specialist on violence against women, delivers an awareness-raising session about transnational marriage abandonment, which also touches on dowry abuse and forced marriage. Transnational marriage abandonment involves vulnerable migrant women being deliberately abandoned or ‘stranded’ in their country of origin by a husband who returns and remains in England or Wales. It was recognised as a form of domestic abuse by the family justice system in 2017 in England and Wales.

Domestic Violence Rule and the Destitution Domestic Violence Concession

Bethan Lant, Head of Training and Development, and Advocacy at Praxis, delivers a training session on the Domestic Violence (DV) Rule and the Destitution Domestic Violence Concession (DDVC).

In this training, you will learn:

  • what the DV Rule and DDVC are, and the difference between them;
  • who is eligible to apply for the DDVC, and for indefinite leave to remain under the DV Rule;
  • what you can, and must not, do to support a survivor to access the DDVC if you think they may be eligible.

After watching this video, you may find it useful to refer to Section 2 of WWA’s Toolkit on the Rights of Survivors Subject to Immigration Control: you can access the toolkit here.
