Day 10: Welsh Women’s Aid, A Day in the Life (Head of Engagement, Michelle Whelan)

Welsh Women’s Aid: A Day in the Life
Head of Engagement
Michelle Whelan

I joined Welsh Women’s Aid at the beginning of June after working in the Welfare to Work sector for over 9 years.  It was earlier this year that I felt it was time for a new direction in my career and to hopefully really make a difference to peoples lives.  I have always been passionate about this sector but the opportunity never arose to become part of the movement to end violence against women.

Since June I have travelled across Wales and met with all of our fantastic member groups to get a feel and understanding of the work they carry out daily and the difference they make to victims lives.  I was truly overwhelmed by the compassion, focus and determination our member groups have to support victims and survivors in helping them to overcome their experiences and creating new lives for themselves.

Earlier this month I headed to North Wales with our new CEO Eleri Butler to attend the North Wales member groups regional meeting.  It was very positive to see all the member groups at one meeting where discussions took place around current priorities and focuses for the coming year.  Winston Roddick who is the PCC for North Wales was also present and discussed his strategic priorities.

As Head of Engagement, each day brings with it new challenges and experiences.  I am constantly on a learning curve and draw upon the expertise not only from our very experienced and well established staff within Welsh Womens Aid but also from our member groups who are at the forefront of what we do.  I feel privileged to be working for Welsh Womens Aid and have met many inspirational women in the 6 months I have been here, the support I have received within my role has been second to none and I look forward to hopefully making a difference.
