100 Years 100 Banners Workshop

PROCESSIONS and Welsh Women’s Aid will hold a series of banner making workshops led by Hexxx, a female art collective, on Monday 9th April, Tuesday 10th April and Saturday 9th June.

PROCESSIONS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a mass participation artwork to celebrate one hundred years of votes for women. Artichoke invites women* and girls across the UK to come together on the streets of Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh and London on Sunday 10th June 2018 to mark this historic moment in a living, moving portrait of women in the 21st century. PROCESSIONS is produced by Artichoke, the UK’s largest producer of art in the public realm, as part of 14-18 NOW, the UK’s official arts programme for the First World War centenary.

Hexxx (Jessye Curtis, Phoebe Davies and Sarah Smith) are a group of female artists from South Wales and Lancashire. Through collaboration and collective action they generate work which explores power dynamics and relationships of solidarity. Their work is often site and context dependent, using installation, live performance, print and spoken word to explore autobiographical experiences, histories and the unspoken.

These workshops are one of Artichoke’s 10 banner commissions, as part of PROCESSIONS’ 100 Years 100 Banners programme. 100 women artists have been commissioned to make banners with community groups up and down the country in the lead-up to PROCESSIONS.

The banners will form part of this vast artwork and will go on to be publicly exhibited across the UK following the events.

For this workshop series, Welsh Women’s Aid invites survivors, members and friends to come together to make a unique centenary banner that will express the ideas, concerns and hopes of women in the 21st century. It is an opportunity to learn new skills from experienced artists, make a unique, expressive banner to last and join thousands of women to celebrate 100 years of women having the vote.

The workshop series, led by Hexxx, will take place on Monday 9th AprilTuesday 10th April and Saturday 9th June, from 13:30 – 16:30 at Welsh Women’s Aid’s head office in Pentwyn, Cardiff.

  • The first two workshops will focus on Slogans, Aesthetics and Editing, developing a collective design for the banner, a voice from a working group from Welsh Women’s Aid. The final concept for the banner will be collectively designed by the end of the second workshop.

(As Hexxx’s studio is based in London, the banner will be fabricated between workshop two and three by Hexxx in London).

  • The last workshop will be a time for the participants to reflect on the final banner before the group carry it at PROCESSIONS Cardiff on 10th June 2018.

Could we ask all participants to ensure that they are available for all three workshops when booking.

On Sunday 10th of June, women and girls in Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh and London will walk together as part of this celebratory mass participation artwork.
